Benefits of

SCIENCE FAIR Projects

The science fair is an interdisciplinary project that allows students to apply critical thinking and science process skills throughout many different subject areas such as, science, math, technology, reading, writing and art. Benefits of completing a science fair project are:

  • Build critical thinking skills

  • Improved reading comprehension skills

  • Improved writing skills

  • Enhance research skills

  • Time management

  • Communication skills

The science fair is mandatory for all 4-5 graders at Pembroke Pines FSU Charter Elementary. The science fair is a long-term project that students are required to complete at home over a period of 10-12 weeks and submit in early third quarter on the week of March 7-11, 2016. Each class has an assigned due date:

  • Mon Mar 7 - Mrs. Rodriguez and Mrs. Roman

  • Tue Mar 8 - Mr. Spence and Mrs. Grosse

  • Wed Mar 9 - Ms. Slaski and Ms. Garcia

  • Thu Mar 10 - Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. Toruno

  • Fri Mar 11 - Mrs. Medina, Mrs. Silverman, and Mrs. Coleman

.

In the coming weeks students will be provided with a detailed timeline log and rubric to guide the successful completion of their science fair project. All pertaining information, assignments, and teaching resources will be shared in this website.

To begin preparations for this year’s science fair, all 4-5 grade students will be introduce to the Roller Coaster Marbles experiment from ScienceBuddies.org. Throughout a period of about 10-12 weeks, this experiment will be conducted in the science lab to learn, practice, and compare the use of the scientific method and the engineering design process. At the same time students will apply this knowledge to their teacher-approved-science–fair-project, which will be completed at home under adult supervision. All science fair projects must be from the ScienceBuddies.org website.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD VS ENGINEERING METHOD

Depending on the project chosen by the student, some students will have to use the scientific method and others the engineering method. The science fair will have young scientist and engineers.

While scientists study how nature works, engineers create new things, such as products, websites, environments, and experiences. Because engineers and scientists have different objectives, they follow different processes in their work. Scientists perform experiments using the scientific method; whereas, engineers follow the creativity-based engineering design process (EDP).

What you need to do to PREPARE for the SCIENCE FAIR

No matter which type of project the student chooses, scientific or engineering, the first activities to get them prepared for the science fair are the same:

  • Topic Selection Wizard - sent home week of Oct 26-30, 2015

  •  Project Printout - sent home week of Nov 2-6, 2015

  •  Research (Vocabulary, Q&A, and Bibliography) - must be completed  by  Nov 13 and stored in the STEAM folder for teacher evaluation.
